Under The Sun

I’ve always loved summertime – I think it’s one of the reasons that I was so determined to live in California even though I grew up on the East Coast.  I was fascinated by the perpetual sunshine, the famous addresses and the vision of long, leisurely walks along the beach on a daily basis.

My reality out here on the left coast is a bit of a departure from the vision, but I enjoy it none-the-less.  I don’t live near the beach, so I don’t get to go as often as I’d like, but I love the ‘home and garden’ kind of care that many people in my neighborhood put into their landscaping.

It’s always outdoor weather in Southern California, so people use their patios and pools a lot more than in other areas of the country.  I love strolling through the area where I live – hearing all the splashy fun and looking at all the pretty manicured lawns and gorgeous colorful flowers that always seem to be in full bloom.

I don’t exactly have a green thumb so I am in awe of the flower, vegetable and herb gardens that people create and maintain – with what seems like (to me) such effortlessness.  I think it’s so cute when they add personalized mailboxes or address plaques naturally into the garden setting;  It just seems very charming and reminscent of nice, quiet farm-living.

I guess, more than anything else, it’s the simplicity of the California lifestyle that I love.  Growing up in New York City, I always felt rushed and caught up in such a flurry of activity.  Here in the laid-back land of “always 75 degrees and sunny”, I feel much more relaxed and closer to nature.  There’s no mad-rush towards anything here and it’s easier to slow down and take a breather  – in the scenic company of mountains, beaches or forests.

Now, if we could only do something about that smog…but that’s an article for another day.
