Comfort Camping, the Perfect End to Summer
End of summer. Pool party. Sunset. Two more words: fire pit. Now, I’ll admit, in no way, shape or form can I be considered an avid camper. But I like the idea of camping. There was a time I thought I wanted to “rough it” and have a real, deep in the woods camping experience. It was mostly because I had never been camping as a kid and I had spent my whole life romanticizing what I thought it would be like. A few years ago I finally got to have my much-awaited camping trip along with my husband and three of his siblings, two of whom actually were avid campers. I was excited because they were determined to provide an authentic camping experience for me, complete with a canoe ride, swimming in an ice-cold lake, cooking around the camp-fire and taking turns telling scary stories late into the very dark night. It was also really fun getting camping 101 lessons from my sisters-in-law on environmentally friendly waste disposal, cleaning our dishes with dirt and general fire pit safety. So far, so great! My first camping trip was all that I’d hoped it would be. Then came the time to go to sleep. That was the deal-breaker. I felt that everything up to that point had been awesome; sleeping in a flimsy tent under which I could feel what seemed like every rock, stick and grain of dirt beneath it…not so much. That may seem like a small thing compared to the great time that I had otherwise, but I’m a girl who likes her sleep and the lack of it has long-lasting and far-reaching implications.
Ah well. Thus ended my love-affair with the idea of camping. I still like the idea of “comfort-camping” though. Right in the comfort of my backyard. Grabbing some wood from the elegant log racks by the pool and throwing them into the outdoor fireplace. Relaxing in the hammock. Leisurely enjoying the sunset after an invigorating dip in the pool. It’s not camping, but it sure is a mighty fine way to end the summer. And I don’t have to sleep on rocks.
