Walk for a Cure: Pasadena Half-Marathon with Chandra Wilson to Benefit CureMito
Well, now that the non-stop movement and craziness of the holidays, school break and family vacation is over, I can settle back into my normal routine, which includes writing blog posts, of course. I’ve got a lot of reviews, giveaways and interesting topics backed up, so catching up will be somewhat daunting, but I think I’m finally up for the challenge.
First up is something I feel is extremely worthy to write about, mostly because in my opinion, blogging is best when it’s personal and used to help or uplift others. And it’s especially rewarding when you get to set your sights on helping someone special, particularly a very dear friend.
Next month, I’ll be running walking with my wonderful long-time friend, actress Chandra Wilson, in the Rock and Roll Pasadena Half-Marathon to benefit the
CureMito Foundation.
CureMito is a research organization that seeks to provide medical assistance and relief to patients suffering from a disorder known as Mitochondria. Mito patients may suffer from a host of functional disorders such as Autism, SIDS, migraine, chronic fatigue , fibromyalgia, cyclical vomiting syndrome, and IBS, that have a basis in the body’s energy production function. Mitochondrial Disorder is a common cause of seizures and stroke in children and is more prevalent than all childhood cancers combined.
Chandra serves as Ambassador for the CureMito Foundation because last year her daughter was diagnosed with Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome (CVS), as the result of an underlying Mitochondrial dysfunction. She spent many months trying to figure out why her teenager was suddenly overcome by constant bouts of vomiting and illness that would keep her in the hospital and out of school for weeks on end.
Doctors initially ran test after test only to remain stumped by what the cause of these painful episodes was. Then, finally, after being put in contact with Dr. Richard Boles, a pioneer in research for Mitrochondrial disorders, Sarina was officially diagnosed with CVS. She was subsequently placed on a strict nutritional and lifestyle regimen which has been helping her to successfully manage her illness.
Unfortunately, there are other kids who are not so lucky. Mitochondrial disorders take on many different forms and cures are not always so readily available. The CureMito Foundation seeks to continue and enhance it’s research and development of treatments for Mitochondrial diseases.
And with the support from funds raised via the Pasadena Rock and Roll Half-Marathon, they will be able to do just that.
So, I’m asking for your support in one (or all!) of three ways:
Share

Walk (or run) with us! Chandra promises to keep the Beyonce cranked up on the iPod speakers for inspiration, so get out your running shoes and join us! The deadline to sign up as a team member is February 5th. Join the team here.
Over the years, Chandra has been an incredibly supportive friend and an inspiration to me and I am beyond thrilled to be able lend a helping hand, however small, towards her CureMito efforts.
Now, I just need to get out of this post-vacation slump and get out on the track for some trial run/walks. Time is ticking! Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Wow! I never knew about this disorder. I hope your walk goes well. Go Team Chandra!
Thanks Eva! I may even try to do a light jog at the end part of the walk!
Good for you! I’m curious about Chandra’s daughter’s strict lifestyle choices–I’m interested in how lifestyle changes affect different illnesses…I’ll be googling it! Thanks!
I know part of her regimen involves getting the proper amount of rest and keeping stress levels low, but since she just started her freshman year of college, I’m sure even that’s a real daily challenge!
Check out curemito.org ………..it has a lot of info about kids with mitochondrial disorders like myself
Thanks for the link Leighanne – that site is a great resource for anyone suffering with or wanting to learn more about Mito!
I have never heard of this disease before, but it sounds terrible! I love that you are supporting a cause you believe in!
Hi Kimberly – yes, it was definitely a not so good year for them before the diagnosis. I am grateful I can support a really good cause AND a fantastic friend at the same time.
Great! I am sharing this with everyone!
I’ve never heard of CVS before and after looking it up I’m horrified. I cannot think of a worse feeling than nausea. Those poor children! That is NOT okay.
Let’s find a cure…
Thanks so much Jamie! It is pretty heart-wrenching the stuff these kids have to go through. Here’s hoping for more treatment options and a cure!
Never heard of Mitochondria before, thanks for the information! I’ll spread the voice!
Thanks for spreading awareness and letting us know about this. Best of luck on your walk!!
Thanks Ana!
I’m a nurse but I don’t ever remember learning about the disease. My hear breaks for those who suffer from it….thank you for helping to spread awareness.
Hi Caryn,
Yes, that’s unfortunately why it took so long for them to figure out the cause of all the vomiting and stomach pains – just not enough is known about this condition yet. But hopefully that won’t be the case for long.
love this!!! best of wishes!! and LOVE CHANDRA!!! I threw Chandra an opening night party on Broadway! when she was in CHICAGO!!! she is brilliant!! xoxo
I definitely agree with you on the brilliant part Natalie!
such a great thing you’re doing for this cause. hope they find a cure!
Thank you Vanessa!
This is a beautiful post. And Chandra looks gorgeous:)
Thank you for your commitment with helping raising awareness and funds for this very worthy cause. I was diagnosed with a mitochondrial disease this past year and am very grateful for walks like this to help fund research in hopes for a cure.
So glad to hear people talking about mito! My 2 year old daughter suffers from mitochondrial disorder. I will also be walking in the half marathon! Check out my blog at http://www.sweetasmom.blogspot.com Keep spreading the word for a cure!!
