Those are the adjectives that first come to mind when thinking about Cavalia’s Odysseo, the wonderful live “equine extravaganza” that’s currently performing for delighted audiences in downtown Burbank.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first made arrangements to attend the show, as I hadn’t spoken to anyone who’d actually seen it. But the accounts I was getting from second-hand sources was that it was spectacular.
And now, after having seen the show myself, I’d have to agree with that assessment. Any show that can keep my kids engaged, wide-eyed and clapping for more than two hours, gets a huge stamp of approval from me.
Aside from keeping my children thoroughly entertained, though, Cavalia’s Odysseo is pure beauty in motion for all ages. As corny as that may sound, I’m hard-pressed to think of any other way to describe it. From the African dance troupe whose rapid-fire tumbling skills defy gravity to the amazing acrobatics of the dancers and the eye-popping stunts carried out by the performers riding horses – every scene change is a treat to behold.
And just when you find yourself focusing on the high-energy of the stage performers up front, you begin to notice the beautiful imagery being shown on the giant IMAX video screen at the back of the stage. It blends in so well with the action, that you almost forget it’s there, until it changes to reveal another breath-taking image that seems to transport the make-shift arena directly into whatever world it’s displaying on the screen.
Show officials prohibit the use of flash photography or videos, so I wasn’t able to capture the full picture of how incredible the show is on film, but I did manage to get a tiny clip that illustrates a little bit of the fun and lightheartedness that keeps the audience laughing and cheering at the same time:
Adding the perfect accent to the action and the dreamy imagery, was a live band and vocalist, whose silky voice oozed sultriness. She smoothly delivered haunting melodies that, if not for the excitement swirling around, could have lulled anyone happily into a gentle and peaceful sleep.
My favorite sequence of the night involved a merry-go-round descending onto the stage with dancers stretching their bodies across metal poles in impossibly difficult positions to create an impressive live-action carousel.
From the fast-paced, high-energy opening to the funny horse stunts and the gorgeous, ethereal music and video images, Cavalia did not fail to deliver on it’s promise to “push the limits of live entertainment” in any one of it’s 120-minutes. The show is truly a thrill-ride to the very end and my daughters have been clamoring to see it once more before it leaves town.
Cavalia’s Odysseo is an enchanting achievement in entertainment artistry and will likely be branded into audiences’ memory for a long time to come.
