Can’t We All Just Get Along?

Harsh, no??
‘Cuz, hey, don’t we live in a celebrity-obsessed culture with TV, Movie and Professional Sports stars who are the original “brand ambassadors”? Aren’t they the ones that set in motion this whole mad rush to create an image and buzz around products, services, offerings…whatever? Yes, they are. But nobody’s hatin’ on them. In fact, they get to keep churning out more and more avenues through which to promote their particular brand – but, c’mon, do we really need another perfume or clothing line with a celebrity’s name on it?
So given our tolerance of the “star” circus, why do we smirk over a mommy blogger’s desire to make it big? Yeah, some blogger’s have a specific skill or service that they are simply (or very cleverly) promoting through their blog, but why isn’t it okay to just have discovered a love for blogging for blogging’s sake? And also to try to make a buck off that hobby…simply because you can?
Hollywood is filled with stories of pretty people who just sort of fell into acting because they were in the right place at the right time and someone noticed them. Do they capitalize on that opportunity just because they can? Of course they do…who wouldn’t!! Do we fault them for that? NO! We salivate and fawn breathlessly over their every move.
Sure, it’s an interesting aside that Brad Pitt is really into architecture and knows how to build stuff, but it’s not really necessary to his brand – or his box office ticket sales. And so it is with Heather from Dooce, the most famous of mommy bloggers who blogs, simply, about her life. Now, Heather is clearly a stylish woman and there are some great photographs on her blog, but there is no doubt that what initially kept readers coming back and growing into the millions of numbers that she now has, was her crazy, in your face, humor and raw honesty.
So, I guess what I’m saying is this; to bloggers – yes, the snark can be intimidating, but if you wanna blog, blog. If you wanna monetize your blog , learn how to do it effectively and then go for it. If you like freebies and want to take them, do it and enjoy the perks. Then go and read blogs like Anna’s or Pro Blogger and educate yourself on the PR/Blogger game. Eventually you’ll be able to make savvier decisions about what you will and will not do for swag. Don’t worry so much about what you stand for right now, just write and have fun with it and you’ll soon learn the ropes and find your voice.
And to those that have a problem with how crowded the landscape is getting or who flak about the integrity of mommy bloggers promoting various and sundry products…get over it. It’s a personal choice, it’s an opinion and when you get right down to it, it’s their 15 minutes – however they choose to take it.
So, enough with the criticism and on with the education and assistance in making those precious minutes the best they can be. That is all.

Really well said Tisha. There is enough for everyone and helping each other rather than trying to pull each other down is much more rewarding all round!

Tisha great advice. I think you really do have to be comfortable with what you are doing and be confident that you are doing things in a way that positively contribute. When you know this for certain, it is much easier to continue to successfully move forward through any criticism that may come your way. The reality is that you may run into it from time to time, but as long as you know you are following your own truth, you will not be distracted or negatively impacted by it.

Hey Sibyl – so true what you said about being confident in what you’re doing! It’s definitely a good practice to toughen oneself up against the certain criticism they’ll receive at one time or another, especially in this very crowded sea of bloggers vying for attention. I read a comment yesterday on another blog about how this woman was having such great fun with blogging until she recieved her first few negative and mean comments. She wanted to know if that was a normal thing or if it meant that her writing was just crap and maybe she should just stop blogging altogether! I bet there’s plenty of stories of people out there who hung in the towel for very similar reasons. So it is imperative that we claim our platform, hold onto it tightly and wave it around proudly – regardless of the praise or criticism involved.
Thanks, as always, for your insightful comments!
Applause! Applause! Very well said indeed!

So true… All the snark is a waste of time. Everyone is entitled to earn a living; especially at what they love. Following you from Follow Friday on BlogFrog.
