Listen to this Post. Powered by iSpeech.org

Boy, the blogosphere sure is buzzing these days! There’s so many events, parties and learning opportunities that it feels like I’M starting school again along with my daughter.  I think I will (un)officially dub this time of year “Blogging Season”!  Or maybe I’ll just wait until next year and see if the same kind of thing happens and then make it official. One more thing to add to my list. Oy.

Seriously, though, there are a couple of terrific events happening today that I wanted to call your attention to. The first is being run by Working Mother Magazine online, where I also contribute a Mom blog (that has been woefully neglected over the summer, but I digress).  Here is the information for the Twitter Party they’re hosting tonight:

Join other tweeting moms online Thursday night for the Healthy LifeStyle Twitter Party! As we share tips on feeding our kids according to the 3 Working Mother rules: healthy, easy, fast!

All tweeting moms will have the chance to win fun prizes from Dole!

Follow @workingmother

When: Thursday, September 9

Time: 9 p.m.-10 p.m. ET online

#tag for our party: #WMDole

Sign up by emailing your Twitter Username to:  RSVP@workingmother.com

So get those kiddies to bed, grab your favorite beverage and go get some great healthy eating tips for your kids and win some prizes – that’s an order! :-)

The other event I wanted to share with you is happening this afternoon as part of Life Insurance Awareness Month (who knew?!) and is sponsored by the LIFE Foundation:

Today’s Way To Win
- Join
@MomTalkRadio on Twitter this afternoon from 4-5 p.m. EST
- Post a TwitPic from your
“What Matters Most to Me” slideshow with the hashtag #MattersMost
- One winner will be randomly selected to win a $25 gift card!
“What Matters Most to Me” App on Facebook, now would be a great time to do so! In a matter of minutes, the App helps you easily create a multimedia slideshow – pictures, captions and music! – showcasing the important people and things in your life. When you create and post your multimedia masterpiece on Facebook through September 30, you are eligible to win a trip to Aruba, where the winner and one guest will spend five days enjoying the white sands and blue waters in this tropical paradise, and relaxing at the Radisson Resort, Casino & Spa.

So, if you’ve been dragging your feet on Twitter, today’s the day to pick up the pace!  Happy tweeting and good luck!

Oh, and since you’ll be on Twitter anyway, don’t forget to follow me too: @biz_mommy :-)

Have a GREAT Thursday…

Well, the long holiday weekend is over and there was a lot of fun, relaxing time spent with family. All is well. Kludgy MomWe are also fortunate to have a couple more whole days together as a family this week, as it’s Rosh Hashanah and my husband works at a Synagogue so he’s off onThursday and Friday as well. That being said, I’ve decided to take my time putting the finishing touches on my plans for weekly themed posts and focus on getting ready for Gigi at KludgyMom.com’s new Back to School/Back to Blogging event which kicks off next week.  If you’ve been looking for the motivation to start or improve your blog, this is it! You can get some step-by-step instructions on the best ways to set up your blog for maximum exposure and traffic, plus you’ll be surrounded by a community of interactive and supportive women.  It’s a 6-week mini-course and from what I understand it’s pretty laid back with no pressure to complete the assignments on any specific deadlines – you can go at your own pace.  So, what are you waiting for?  Head over to Kludgy Mom’s blog right now and sign up…see you in class! :-)

Celebrating Un-Labor Day

Posted by Tisha on Sep 6, 2010 in Inspiration, Mindfulness Mondays, Work At Home Tips
Listen to this Post. Powered by iSpeech.org

I know that today’s holiday has the word “Labor” in it, but I’m going to take today to exactly the opposite!  There’s always so much busyness going on during the week and as I was sitting here trying to organize this week’s giveaway, gather ideas for the new daily posting schedule I’m working on and prepare for (finally) doing a new Biz Mommy Buzz video, I realized that this was NOT how I wanted to spend what should be my day off.

I thought about my two lovely little girls watching TV and my husband pacing around the way he usually does when there’s no scheduled agenda going on and I decided that it’s much too beautfiul a day to be hunched over my computer.  And, ignoring the most important people in my life when we all have a rare completely free day?  NOT exactly what I had in mind for a work from home situation.  It’s all about freedom, flexibility and more quality time with your loved ones, right?

So, take a break, my fellow work-at-home moms; the work will be there tomorrow.  Enjoy the glorious freedom and these precious moments with your family while you can – trite as it sounds, these are the things we remember most!

Happy (un) Labor Day!! 8-)

A Little Break AND This Week’s Winner

Posted by Tisha on Aug 29, 2010 in Giveaways & Contests
Listen to this Post. Powered by iSpeech.org

Well, Sunday is here again and it’s time to get started on the weekly hustle and bustle.  I’m excited, though because my kids just started piano lessons and they’re really loving it.  I’m looking forward to seeing how they progress over the semester and, of course, preparing to shuttle them around to all of the other extracurricular activities that they’re planning to participate in.  As for my activities, I’ve got some extra writing projects that I’m working on for a client that will be taking up more of my time than usual this week, so I’m taking a little mini-break from the blog.  But I’ll be back next week in full swing, with a brand new giveaway and a whole new editorial schedule.

In the meantime, however, I guess I should let you in on who won the giveaway for this week, huh?  Well, congratulations to Carolyn (cmeier1975@gmail.com), the winner of the Yoplait Prize pack w/Activo Tote courtesy of Yoplait and My Blog Spark!

Have a FANTASTIC week everyone!!

5 Tips for Energizing Your Blog

Posted by Tisha on Aug 27, 2010 in Blogging Tips, Friday's Featured Guest
Listen to this Post. Powered by iSpeech.org

Today’s post is going to be a little different. Recently, the good folks at BlogEnergizer.com offered interested bloggers an exclusive interview as part of a contest they’re running.  Knowing their reputation for solid, quality, highly usable content, of course, I said yes! Here is the resulting interview with team leader, Lynette Chandler. I hope you find lots of good information in it just as I have.  And as I mentioned, this is part of a contest, so don’t forget to go here  and vote for me because the interview with the most votes will win some cool prizes!

Although I learned of Blog Energizer a long time ago and often used the free service, I hesitated for a long time to sign up for premium membership because I thought if I promoted where I got some of my goodies from too heavily people would just go to your site instead of mine for future info. What do you say to people with those types of reservations who are on the fence about premium membership?

This is a very good question and I see where we do have some branding challenges. Let’s backtrack a little bit to explain our membership levels. The basic membership is free. Anyone interested only needs to subscribe at http://blogenergizer.com and that’s it. Basic members will receive notifications when we find good stuff they can share on their blogs, when anyone is looking for a guest blogger, when people are seeking blogs to guest blog at and so on. This usually happens once a week. You don’t have to share everything because not everything we find is relevant to your blog or audience. When you do choose to share the things we find, you can certainly link to the offer without any credit to us. Sometimes for downloadable items we do host those and ask you to use our link. That’s just makes it easy for you to put it up on your blog. But you are certainly free to download it and re-upload to your blog so that it looks like they come from you. There are certain cases where the original author of the resource does not allow that in that case we tell you where you should send your readers to.

But the bottom line is, unlike many other site who want you to credit them, whatever goodies we find, we don’t require you to tell others where you got them from. We are here to make blogging easier for you. Think of us like an assistant who looks out for good stuff for you and your blog.

Next, there’s Premium membership. Premium members still get and enjoy the notifications we send out to basic members but on top of that they get 90 blogging prompts every month in three major topics. Business, Health and Fitness and Home and Family. These are idea starters so before you start the month, you can look through this list and begin to fill your blog based on the suggestions in the prompts. Where applicable, we also suggest ways you can monetize certain posts.

You don’t have to blog every single suggestion in the prompts but it certainly helps you start the month right and keeps you going for the times when you are really stuck what to blog about. There is no need to refer to us or to tell people where you get your blogging ideas from. You can claim it all – although if you want to share with others how you come up with wonderful topics to write about we appreciate it :)

On top of that, Premium members are also highly encouraged to create goodies for our basic members to share. This is so very important to help your blog grow. For example, if you write a super useful short report and submit it to us, we will let basic members know and encourage everyone to put it up on their blog for their readers. When this happens, you spread the name of your blog, your products and services. You can certainly do it on your own but the point is, with your Premium membership, there’s leverage and that goes a long way.

There’s also other benefits of Premium membership. For example, whenever you need a guest author, we will let others know, if you want to guest blog for others, we will notify the members – this is very popular. One Premium member put out a notice that she is looking for blogs to comment on and got tons of responses. This cut down her time to search for blogs but also when she makes her rounds to comment, she’s planting the seed for her site. Very creative use of her account.

You recommend using a blogging calendar – and even offer a template through the Blog Energizer blog. What’s the most effective way to use it to spark blog post ideas and to generally keep things moving along smoothly (and regularly) on your blog?

I believe everybody has their own rhythm but if you’re kinda new or really stuck, the calendar is always a good place to start. There’s always something going on in the month or week or day you can turn into a blog post. For example, did you know August is What Will Be Your Legacy Month? There are so many ways you can use that and it can fit into almost any topic whether you are blogging for business audiences, health, family, biking, homeschooling, weight loss anything.

For me, the best way to keep things going is to establish a routine. At the end of each month maybe you can sit down with the calendar and see what events and happenings that are relevant to your blog that you can use. Then pencil those in your list or better yet – write a draft and set a date on that draft in your blog. You’ll find just by doing that alone, you’ll have at least one item to write about a week. You really only need 4 for the month. Doing this often births other related topics – put them down on your list. Now, when you look at this list, you may find you have more than enough for the month.

Don’t just look at the calendar and strike off the irrelevant ones or take things at face value either. Ask yourself questions like how can this day/event be turned into something relevant? For example, you could use your whole experience with the calendar as a topic – maybe you write about how you can use a calendar to plan fun and meals with meaning behind it – maybe a dish passed down from your great-grandmother, something you consider to be her legacy.

You can do this weekly too if that works better. The thing is to jump start the blog so you don’t feel like its a drag. I’ve found once you get going, there’s momentum and when you gain momentum and have perhaps blocked out some time, write out as many posts as you can right in that moment and schedule them. Then as the weeks and days unfold, if you have additional things to write about, all that is a bonus.

What’s more important when you’re just starting out with a blog – optimizing for search engines or trying to build a following in other ways like blog commenting, joining forums and using social media?

I hesitate to put some activities above others because some things really need to be done at the same time. But of course that is not possible so the best bet is to cycle through them. The key things I do in no particular order are:

Create good content while you’re at this, you can also work in the search engine optimization thing. This also includes writing for autoresponders, emails and free downloadables.

Build that list and generate traffic – this is where you could work in things like taking the content created and approaching a popular blog and seeing if they want it for a guest post if not, I’ll approach other blogs or put it on a article directory. Re-purposing content into audio or video. Answering questions on forums and pointing people to helpful resources which hopefully I have written on my blog and do the same on Twitter too. I’ve searched for questions people asked and answered them.

It is a lot of little little activities but it helps to build a list of common tasks. Then every week you pick out a couple from each ‘category’ to attack.

What are the best sites to learn blogging, internet marketing and basic “techy” stuff from?

Well of course I am biased and would not do our company justice if I do not suggest Blogging Starter Pack (http://bloggingstarterpack.com) and Tech Based Marketing (http://techbasedmarketing.com) those two will over the beginning blogging blocks and more technical stuff. As far as beginning Internet Marketing goes I have a couple of favorites which I’ll list here.

SuccessChef.com

SelfStartersWeeklyTips.com

MomMasterminds.com

InternetMarketingSweetie.com

There is so much knowledge out there to sort through on the internet that it can be overwhelming when trying to become a professional blogger or internet marketer. What would you say is the fastest way for a beginner to monetize their blog and begin to see some results for all their efforts?

Such an excellent question. Before I go further, let me give a little background. If you’ve followed us before you’d probably have heard me talking it took me a long time to turn things around. In that light, I’m probably not the right person to share tips on quick profits because everything we do we worked very hard and long for it.

I am certainly not saying you can’t make it in a fraction of the time we did. In fact, if you are willing to stick it out and work it even when things are hard and there seems like no reward, you probably will. It took us a longer time to get the ball chugging along because I many mistakes, among which, I wasn’t willing to listen to those more experienced. So right there is a big lesson for anyone.

No matter what you are promoting – your own or affiliates products, put your offer out there regularly. If you don’t offer the product, people won’t buy or take actions that will lead them to a sale.

Have your own products? Take down all those affiliate ads and banners and replace them with your own. There is a time and place for affiliate promotion. Give your own products prominence.

For both affiliate and your own products, find angles to write about them regularly and putting them in front of your audience. Lead people to subscribe to your list and work on adding your offers there too.

Of course you don’t want your blog to turn into a pitch farm so you have to balance all that out with great content. It is rather an art. Let me suggest you follow a blog Contentrix.com and when I say follow, not just read the content. Though they do provide great information. Rather look at the way the content is being used to feature their products or affiliate products. How the blog post circles back to touch upon previous offers or leads people to take some kind of action. How the blog design works to feature their products and so on.

Make your offers regularly, tastefully and work on bringing in that traffic. These things go hand in hand.

The Wisdom of the Cricket

Posted by Tisha on Aug 25, 2010 in Inspiration, Personal Development
Listen to this Post. Powered by iSpeech.org

I have crickets in my office.  They’re not over-running the place and I rarely actually see them, but boy can I hear them – loud and clear.  They come out of hiding in my backyard after sundown and party like it’s 1999.  But during the day, they’re mostly invisible – except if you’re really still and you listen very closely you can hear the faint, but constant little chirp in the distance.

It occurred to me this morning that life is kinda like that; we bellow and ramble along in our daily life until something (a good or bad event in our lives) happens and then we lay low for a bit.  Contentment often softens us into silence as does unfortunate circumstances.  What I thought about mostly, though, as I sat down to write with the music of the crickets behind me, is that the softening that occurs often brings about a series of negative actions or, more often, non-actions.

In the case of contentment, we stop living consciously and things become rote, complacent.  We have the feeling of having arriven at our destination and we create a little bubble around our world.  We are happy as a clam – until the bubble pops.

Then we are in the dreaded “negative” circumstances and we slow up even more – how can we function in all this misery?!

The last four years for me have been a series of these kinds of scenarios.  My family has been on a roller-coaster ride of financial, emotional and marital issues that have often caused me to just stop.   I don’t mean stop completely, but the pattern was to be excited about the prospect of something good happening, become content and complacent, watch things not work out necessarily as expected and then nurse my wounds through bouts of complaining, self-doubt, half-hearted attempts at re-organization, poor eating habits, missed deadlines, general hand-wringing and self-pity.

But here’s what I learned from my friend, the cricket:  the power of consistency.  Through those same four years of my roller-coaster rides, those crickets have not missed a beat.  I’ve tried lots of things to get rid of them, but still they remain – stronger than ever – singing their nightly songs.

So that’s what it is peeps – the song of the cricket; simple but true, as most words of wisdom are.  Stuff is going to happen and obviously some of it won’t be good.  You’re going to doubt yourself, your choices, your friends, your blog…and you’re going to rage sometimes too, but don’t stop.  Even in the worst of circumstances, things will settle down again (they always do) and you’ll be glad you stayed the course.  This is the course of action that separates the people you know that always seem so lucky and the people who seem to have unfortunate circumstances happen every week.

It’s all about perspective and having a deep understanding of what it means to remain neutral and find your center.  Now, that doesn’t mean that you can’t rejoice when you’re happy, but it does mean embracing the bad stuff just as wholeheartedly.   I know many feel that’s counter-intuitive, but guess what?  The bad stuff (feelings, people, events)  happens anyway, right?  So, since we can’t change that, the key is to change our attitude about it.

So, go ahead, relish the good times with a joyfully happy heart! But when those bad times come a-rollin’ in (and they will), take a deep breath, some moments to reflect…and then keep on chirping.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts, so leave me a comment, okay?  Are you in a state of contentment and complacency or frustration and regret?  What tools do you regularly use to help you move forward?

Tutorial Tuesday: Get a Domain Name…Please!

Posted by Tisha on Aug 24, 2010 in Blogging Tips, Mommy Blogging, Tutorial Tuesdays
Listen to this Post. Powered by iSpeech.org

I have said it before and I’ll say it again – if you’re trying to monetize your blog, get sponsors or attract advertisers in any way – it’s important to begin thinking of your blog as a business as well as presenting yourself as one.  You may get a bite here and there if you’re still rocking the sub-domain (www.you.blogspot.com) instead of www.you.com, but utlimately, advertisers and prospective sponsors view a blog that has it’s own domain as more professional.  So when it comes down to choosing between two blogs (one with a subdomain and one without), it will be the more professional one that gets the gig.  That being said, don’t get left in the dust!  If you’ve been hestitating because you just don’t know how to move your blog from a subdomain to your purchased one or if you think the process is cumbersome, today’s tutorial will show you that it’s as easy (and cheap!) as 1,2,3.

Biz Mommy of the Week: Annette Yen

Posted by Tisha on Aug 23, 2010 in Biz Mommy of the Week, Work At Home Tips
Listen to this Post. Powered by iSpeech.org

Many women find that juggling a family, homeschooling and trying to earn extra income from home is quite a challenge.  Annette Yen of KidsPartyBusiness and BeadPartyBusiness, took that challenge and created an environment where all the facets of her very busy life were woven together to benefit the family as a whole.  She more than just made it work, she found opportunities to make real world lessons for her kids that they couldn’t have gotten in a more traditional educational setting.  What a wonderful testament to the flexibility and creativity that homeschooling offers!

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

Annette Yen is a homeschooling, husband loving mom who has been working from home since she gave birth to her first daughter 18 years ago.  She and her daughter have worked together in many of their home businesses and both girls have since branched out into ventures of their own, as well as still helping with their children’s birthday party business.

Annette enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter, making homemade cards, looking out the window at the beautiful property in her backyard, singing hymns in four part harmony with her family, sipping tea with her cat on her lap and interacting with all the wonderful women she has met through her businesses both off and online.  She’s blessed beyond belief and thanks God for it all.

When did you first start your business?

Well technically I started in about 1979 when I was in high school and did door to door direct sales but more specifically about 12 years ago when I got serious about the idea and started working as a team leader and really growing it as a business.

Tell us about your business and what it is that you do?

I’m a team leader for two direct sales companies (under the same corporate umbrella) – one that provides children’s event entertainment and the other is more traditional party plan with italian glass beads.

Why did you choose your particular business?

Well I fell in love with the concepts of the direct sales business when I first got serious about it 12 years ago. Once I saw the vision of how this type of business model could really help the average stay at home mom bring in a little extra money for her family I got pretty passionate about it.  At the same time, as a homeschooling mom, I really was looking for a particular business where my kids could be completely involved.  When the children’s party business came along, I knew it was the perfect fit for our family – and it has been.

What are some of the challenges you faced when you started your business?

Well the typical stuff, I suppose – fear – fear of rejection, fear of doing it “wrong”, fear of failing.  But beyond that it’s accepting the fact that not everyone that works with me is as passionate about the potential as I am – so I’ve had to learn to really roll with people where they are and coach or mentor more than lead or “dictate”.

How did you know that you had chosen the right path?

My goal was to find something where my kids could be involved with the entire business – after the first week of this particular business, seeing their excitement and having them with me in the journey – I knew it was right!

What does a day in your work at home life look like?

Get up, breakfast, exercise, read with my girls, check my email and other work related things, homeschool, housework, gardening, etc., more work, do a party if booked, more work and then, hopefully, sleep! :)

What does working for yourself and living your passion ultimately mean to you?

Freedom.  That was the first word that came to mind.  Working for yourself does mean you have to work – and work hard, but because you are the one calling the shots, determining how much you need to work to make that income, etc., there is incredible freedom in that.

What advice do you have for other women and moms looking to make the transition to working from home

Remember that you cannot do it all.  Don’t expect that you can be 100% dedicated to your business and 100% dedicated to your family. It’s impossible.  Working from home means that you still have to work and when that work is priority, your family can’t be.  Set your boundaries realistically, find care for your children for those hours where work has to get done and shut the door of your “office” on your way out so that you can then give your full attention to your family when that work is done for the day.  When I fail to practice what I preach about this, my work AND family life suffer – and then we’re missing the whole point of working from home in the first place!

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts, so leave me a comment, okay?  Do you involve your kids in your business?  Do you homeschool?  If so, do you stick with more traditional lesson plans or do you mostly create as you go along, incorporating “real world” experiences?  What’s your biggest homeschooling challenge?

Ahhh, Yoplait. I am so thankful that they were kind enough to sponsor this week’s giveaway – not just because they’re offering such a cool prize – but especially because their sample (that came along with the gift-pack) was a delicious 4-pack of their new yogurt “Yoplait Splitz”.  Now, I’m not usually that big on yogurt, but as many of you know, I recently completed a 10-day cleansing fast in order to prepare for returning to a vegetarian way of eating.  So, needless to say my fridge was pretty bare for those 10 days so as not to tease myself with too many temptations.  Well as luck would have it, the Yoplait sample arrived on the last day of my fast, so one of the first things I got to eat after 10 loooong days was a light, delicious, no artificial flavors, sweeteners or high fructose corn syrup creamy treat.  And the flavor was Strawberry Banana Split!!  Score!  Okay, just in case you’re very suggestible like moi and your mouth is watering right about now (and your favorite flavor EVER is strawberry banana split) – no worries, I got ‘ya covered.  The prize-pack giveaway includes Yoplait samples, plus you can click here to download a printable coupon for $0.50 off your purchase of any flavor of Yoplait Splitz!

So, many thanks again to Yoplait and especially to My Blog Spark for facilitating this giveaway and coupon offer.  And without further ado, on to…the winner of last week’s giveaway of a DVD Box Set of Desperate Housewives, Season 4 is April Vereb of Polka Dots and Pinky Swears
